Resumo: Yagami Raito encontra um estranho caderno com o título de "Death Note" no chão. Mas o caderno "Death Note" não é um caderno normal.Este caderno tem poderes subrenaturais, todas as pessoas cujo o nome escrever-se no caderno morrem. Ao perceber isso, Raito decide fazer uma "punição divina" aos criminosos, para criar um mundo ideal, onde ele será o deus. Pouco depois descobre que o caderno tem um dono: o shinigami (Deus da Morte) Ryuuku. Ao verem que um grande números de crimonosos está a morrer de ataque cardiaco, a policia decide aliar-se a "L", nomeado o melhor detetive do mundo. Começa um jogo de cão e gato entre os dois para ver quem terá a sua identidade esposta primeiro.
